Do they listen? Do they ask useful questions? Do they explain tradeoffs without making you feel talked down to? That early tone usually tells you a lot.
Ask how updates happen.
You should know who you talk to, how decisions get documented, what happens when conditions change, and when the next important choice is coming.
Choose someone you can picture calling.
A build is too personal for a builder you dread talking to. Clear communication and a good attitude are part of the finished product.
