What Red Seal actually means

Carpentry is a voluntary trade in Ontario. No one has to be licensed to pick up a saw and build your home. That means the barrier to entry, legally speaking, is a truck and a business card.

The Red Seal Program is the federal government's answer to that problem. Run by Employment and Social Development Canada through the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship, it sets a national standard of competence for 56 skilled trades. Carpenter is one of them.

To earn a Red Seal as a carpenter, you need to document approximately 9,000 hours of directly related work experience, that's roughly four to five years of full-time carpentry. You then challenge a 100-question inter-provincial exam. The passing mark is 70%.

Why it matters when you're hiring

Most homeowners getting quotes don't ask whether their contractor is Red Seal certified. In Ontario, they don't have to. You can legally hire anyone. The question is whether you should.
The Red Seal is not about credentials for their own sake. It represents someone who has spent years in the trade, been examined by a body with no financial interest in passing them, and demonstrated they can apply that knowledge under real conditions.
A Canadian Contractor trade publication discussion of the certification puts it directly: without a recognized standard, the trade is open to anyone who can call themselves a carpenter.

What it means at Borrelli

Matt Borrelli and his crew hold a Red Seal certification in carpentry. Every project at Borrelli Crafters is led and worked on by skilled craftsmen who excel in their field.

That's not a marketing claim. It's a verifiable qualification issued by Employment and Social Development Canada. You can confirm the Red Seal program's standards at red-seal.ca.

Most people building a custom home or renovating a cottage in Marmora don't come with a checklist of certifications to ask about. They're trusting their builder. The Red Seal is one way to know that trust is grounded in something you can actually verify.
